Vanguard is a low alpha, higher beta, and extremely low cohumulone variety with a high humulene content that gives it a woody and herbal character that imparts a spiciness in the long boil. It is great for all kinds of German-style beers, and craft brewers are giving it broader applications as well. It is grown principally in the U.S. and has a fairly low yield for a U.S. variety.
